The entrance in your house is like a business card

As usual…. to see better “click” on the photos!

As we usually say: “First impression is what really matters”, the same is for your entrance. It is not only a way to pass but it’s the first room in your house.

To furnish it you have to spend the same care you dedicate to the rest of your house. Here are some suggestions that can help you:

The style you choose for your entrance should reflect your personal style, the same you have in the rest of your apartment.

The furnishing of an entrance room is usually made of: a coat hanger, a mirror, a little table/consolle, maybe a seat (for example a chair, a pouf or a little armchair), a carpet, a blackboard, some pictures.

The mirror has many roles: it offers you the possibility to have a look of yourselves before going out and it can make a doorway bigger. Choose the size of the mirror as you want, according to the place where you imagine to place it. You can just lean it against the wall or hang it (if you lean it, it will give more perspective but it isn’t a good idea if you have children or animals!)

To the ones who, like me, don’t have a real doorway I suggest to create a “division” between entry and main room using a bookcase, a screen, or a sort of window made by your metalworker (it should be like one wall of a greenhouse). Another solution could be to change the color of the walls of your main room or to put wallpaper in the entrance. In any case it’s better to use a furniture, it doesn’t matter if it’s small, but what matters is that it divides the two rooms in an optic way. Keep your house style!

Necessary objects for your entrance are a sort of tray to put your keys, mobile phone, personal things, etc. Choose an object that fits your house and I suggest something that is not fragile.

If you want to keep your correspondence in your doorway, maybe bills to pay in short time, leaflets of the expositions you want to visit or appointments to the dentist for example, look for a nice box to put the biggest things. Choose maybe a pinwall where you can easily change things and you can personalize as you want, adding pictures, tickets of your concerts or fabric pieces as the samples for your new cushions…

What is really necessary for me is a perfume for the ambience and I’d choose one with wooden sticks because they work non stop. Take care of the fragrance because it is the first thing your guests will smell coming in. It will be your introducing to them, so dedicate a lot of attention to it!

The light in your entrance room has a double function: the first one is to welcome your guests in place that is lovely and soft, the second one is to light enough to any necessities: you could sometimes require more light than usual to look for something for example or to check that everything is ok before going out. So I’d put two light sources: a softer and a stronger one.

The consolle at the entrance must have a dimension right to the ambience not to obstruct and to fit the house. You can put a tray for your things to leave, a small box (see my article “Suggestions to decorate your house or how to expose what we love or collect in the best way”), a lamp to welcome your guests with the proper light (two lamps only if the doorway and consequently the consolle are big enough), the home fragrance, and so on…

The carpet is necessary to decorate (it is one of the first things your guests will see coming in) and to welcome. Imagine dirty or wet shoes… in this case the plastic can be the right material. It sounds not really nice but believe me: there is a company whose name is “Pappelina” (see my article “Frankfurt 2013 – second part) that produces some very nice plastic carpets and that you can wash in your washing machine at 30 degrees.

Personalize your doorway with pictures of your family, maybe black and white photos. In this way the ones who come in can immediately know you. Put paintings you love, made by artists you are a fan of. I have a friend who really loves Frida Kahlo and is looking forward to hanging her paintings in her house.

Too full coat hangers make mess! Therefore, if you’re a big family or you have a lot of friends, choose a version with many possibilities. It would be a good habit to keep your coats, jackets and hats in your personal room and leave space to your guests. Imagine them coming in, greeting and maybe bringing a little present and you stand there in total panic just because you don’t know where to put their jackets and coats! A situation that everybody has certainly lived!

What is really important is that you follow your style because the entrance is the introduction of yourself to anybody. Be brave! Fashion is not always the most important thing to follow! Your personal mix can be more interesting!
