As usual…. to see better “click” on the photos!
The Industrial design is a process of design applied to products that are to be manufactured through techniques of mass production. The role of an industrial designer is to create and execute design solutions for problems of form, function, usability, physical ergonomics, marketing, brand development and sales. (Wikipedia) It was a boom of factories in Europe in the 20ties. Architects, engineers and workers projected functional furniture and lamps to be used at work. These anonymous projects are mostly regarded as “Archetypen der Moderne” (Pioneers of Modern) e they have become objects to collect.
It’s always the same: when something of our culture vanishes, it comes back in another shape, like a piece to collect, something rare or fashion! When the MP3 appeared, people started to buy long- playing records again. When the e-books arrived on the market, prices of 1st editions went up. When Brussels didn't allow the old 60 Watt-bulbs anymore, designers started to copy their warm light. The way of working has changed. We can take our work with us whenever we want just using our ipad or iphone. They fit perfectly our life! The classical office time has disappeared. And have a look at what happens: in our houses, in communication agencies and famous restaurants we can find the old heavy factory lamps! Creative people sit on uncomfortable chairs and lay their new technology on a desk with an old patina from Lindbergh's years.
We start loving dents, welding, painting that isn’t perfect anymore and the cast iron feet of these pieces because they talk about history, continuity and authenticity. We don’t always talk about important designers when we refer to projects as for example the changing rooms of “Strafor”, the turning chairs of “Singer”, the stools of “Rowac”. It was mostly engineers who became designers, who created classical pieces with their functional projects. This factory furniture has had only one target: functionality! The passion for metal was in the air in the 20ies. Also the masters of “Bauhaus”-Style promoted the “age of machinery”. Marcel Breuer created his armchair “Wassily”, Mart Stam and Mies von der Rohe realized the first steel chair “cantilever” in 1927. But it still takes a lot of years before the work lamps and the metal chairs find their way in our private houses.
When the deindustrialization started in Europe in the 70ies, in London, New York, Paris and San Francisco began the trend of living in a loft. Artists first and the middle class then loved this kind of living. Brick walls and cement floors give more authenticity than drywalls. This is the reason why it’s not for everybody! Sharon Zukin wrote in “Loft Living” in 1982 that only the people that don't really know the steam and the sweat of factories can define a loft a romantic and interesting place. The second era of industrial design began after 2000 and with the developing of digital world. Everything started in Paris, in the galleries of the Marais quarter. Lamps and furniture from old factories were sold there. This trend spread all over Europe. Today this French furniture is very difficult to find and for this reason it is so precious.
The difference of the Style Loft-chic of the 80ies in comparison with the today's rough style is in the new possibility of mixing it with furniture from the mid-century, with wood and soft colors. In the digital era we love it cozier.
As I have said: this authentic furniture and lamps are not easy to find. You need big patience, you have to travel a lot, visit many flea markets. It is also very important that you know the products and you realize which one is really old, if you are going to pay the right price... you often find pieces that need a restoration to come back to what they were, but without being changed. I would like to present you the shop “Atelier NeoRetro” in Milan, Via Luigi Canonica 6, phone +39 02/39524071 The protagonists of this shop are Daniela and Paolo Rodriguez that have often changed their ways in their life finding complete different directions, but always with one thing in common: passion!
What has been a pastime for many years has became a real work at the end: the shop NeoRetrò. Daniela is the queen of the two exhibition floors and Paolo the king of the restoration floor. For that reason the shop is called an “Atelier”. It's not because it’s trend or chic, but it's because all the furniture you find there go under Paolo’s experienced hands before they get ready to be sold.
It's not a normal shop where you always find the same articles. The offer depends on what they discover at flea markets or thanks to word of mouth. There is one thing that I have to underline: it's very important to know what you look for if you work in this field, you have to know the products and the market. Daniela and Paolo are very good at this, they see the diamond from the past even behind years of patina.
You have the possibility to buy their articles and also to rent them. If you furnish advertising sets, prepare photographic stages or you film, they can give you a chair, a table, a lamp that is right for your situation! And one thing more: they have just had a new idea that is dedicated to marriage and wedding planners. But you have to talk to them! Something very new! It's not me who has to tell you!
Also their daughter Lara has been more and more present in the shop in the last months. Daniela and Paolo teaches her this special profession! Because it’s about a Profession that we are talking about!
