Working at home is sometimes a good idea and sometimes it's really heavy!
Everybody who gets up very early in the morning and has to drive in the traffic to reach his work thinks that it's easier for me! For me it's also possible to get an appointment at the hairdresser at two o' clock p.m. of course! It's true, but in the same time I have to do my work anyway and I need more strictness. This is the worst part of my job!

Why? Because when I switch on my computer I see the plates that I have to put into my dishwasher...and the washing machine has just finished its program and I have to move the clothes into the dryer. While I have lunch I also clean the vegetables for the evening...and if we have guests for dinner, I use my lunch break to prepare everything to welcome my friends! I could go on endless...I also have to go out for work! For example to see my clients where they need my consult.

Another aspect that I have never understood is: “Why don't people believe that you really work at home? And even if they accept it, they don't think you really work hard just because your desk is at your home! I can live with this way of thinking, I'm used to it! I'm very responsible of what I do!

\r\n

If you work at home, you have to fix your time, like in an office. You are more flexible of course and this can be good or bad...you have to find the right balance! And now here we are! You need your home office with everything is necessary.

In my case I'm very lucky because I have a whole room that I can dedicate to my work. I have my desk, my scanner, my printer, shelves, computer and place for all my documents.

\r\n

But let's be honest! It isn't easy to see a desk that is really used as a working place in a private house instead a desk that people only use to write their birthday cards or shopping list! It's really difficult to combine it into a private ambience.

We have to create a “bridge” between our working and private life. This means that our desk has to be clean and tidy. All what we normally do in a office can't be done at home. Let's have an example! Post-it aren't decorative at all in our dining or sleeping room, nor in a separate office because we are always talking about an ambience in our house. For that reason we have to respect two rules: have the possibility to work in a proper way and also conserve the aesthetic of our apartment.

First thing: Tidiness with capital letter! Even if you have a mountain of little things, a lot of documents around, look for boxes that give you the possibility to keep your papers. If you need tags for your dossiers search for nice ones! Write on them with the computer or use your “Sunday calligraphy”!

Choose a desk that fits your furnishing, a comfortable chair (this is very important for your back!) and in the same time think about the harmony between your desk and the ambience where it has to stay. The lamp at your working place has to be functional (a good light to work very well!) but it has to fit the rest of your house.

Instead of the post-it fixed everywhere in your office you can hang a “board” that could be a frame or even a whole wall (it depends on the space you can use). You can paint it with blackboard color or magnet color (see my article “Back to school”). It will be very nice to see and you can write or fix your appointments and notes there.

\r\n

Create space for your files and books you need to work. If you are a tidy person, it will be easy for you to buy nice dossiers (better all the same style/color) and keep them on a shelf. On the contrary if you have a lot of different documents and leaves, it will be better to close them in an office wardrobe and everything will be tidy outside.

As it your house, choose your stuff to work with: scissors, pens, pen holder, etc...They should be nice to see, not only functional!

\r\n

And for the same reason, make your working place intimate and special. Put personal things like your family photos, a plant, a radio, some perfumed candles, etc...In other words: everything makes the difference between a normal working place and the office in your house!

If you follow some of my suggestions, you will see that an home office is not as terrible as it seems and you will feel well and comfortable. Your work will run by itself! In my case I have also a cat that sleeps close to my desk. It gives me peace and ideas come out fluently!

I make everything warmer for me in Winter, having a cup of tea, some cookies and when I look outside on the terrace raining or snowing, I ask to myself “Who is luckier than me?”

Good work! It doesn't matter where!!!
