The house of our friends is just in front of this little and beautiful island that makes me very curious about its history...well known as the most little kingdom of the world! \r\nFirst of all I would like to tell you that Sardinia – I was able to see right now only a little part – is so beautiful that you have to visit it...especially in the low season! This time I also visited Tavolara and this made my visit more precious than the other ones - for sure! \r\nThe story of the island in a very short version: \r\nIn the 1836 the king Carlo Alberto of Savoia was visiting the island and asked his marines for the name of it. They didn’t know it, so he asked around, presenting himself as the king of Sardinia. Guiseppe Bertoleoni, surrounded by his sheep's seemed to have the answer: “And me I'm the king of Tavolara”! \r\nCarlo Alberto stayed there for one week and before leaving he gave to Bertoleoni a golden watch as a present and he also gave to Bertoleoni the independence of Tavolara (so the story tells). After a short time a parchment signed from the king arrived from Sassari where Tavolara was recognized as a sovereign state. All these facts are testimony of the family Bertoleoni, also because the family Bertoleoni are not figured in the royal list of Italy. \r\n\r\nIn the meantime Paolo, Giuseppe’s son, became king Paolo I, married Pasqua Favale and they got a son called Carlo I. The last received the visit of the Queen Vittoria from England in 1896, she recognized the existence of this little kingdom. In a photo were in the center is Carlo I surrounded by his family, made on the deck of the ship, you can see the name “Vulcan” the ship of Queen Vittoria. The Bertoleoni family says, that you can find exactly this photo at Buckingham Palace where there is a photo collection of all royal families in the world. Under the photo is written a little caption: The royal family of Tavolara in the Golfo of Terranova Pausania, the most little kingdom of the world”. Fact is that the island makes part of Italy since the proclamation of the march 17th, 1861. \r\nThe Bertoleoni family owns some little houses and 2 restaurants on the island, the rest of the island is granted by Italy to the NATO as a military base. \r\nThe whole Bertoleoni are buried in the little cemetery on the island. \r\nThe actually king's name of Tavolara is Tonino Bertoleoni (I took my information from Wikipedia Italy). \r\nAlso without knowing the whole story of the island... you have to see this little paradise! We took a little ferryboat from Porto San Paolo to get there. I visited the cemetery of the royal family, had a walk between the sandy hills, admired the colors of the sea, jumped inside and enjoyed the marvelous water. Unfortunately I didn’t meet the king Tonino in his restaurant because of the weather that turned from sunny into cloudy and windy, so we had to leave too early. \r\nYou can hear on the video the wind of Sardinia.
