Before warming up our needles I’d like to give you some information about a world that according to me is really wonderful!

Who starts this hobby and falls in love with it can easily practice it anywhere. I mean you can knit in trains going to work, when you meet friends, while you travel by car for long time. I have even knit during my university lessons, at the cinema and with many astonishing people around me! I usually knit at home in the evening now. My perfect evening is staying with my husband and my cat Paul on the sofa, together near the fireplace…I knit something soft, like a beautiful scarf for example. Any time we travel by car and I have to sit near my husband driving I usually knit. We spend so many hours in the car that it’s worth doing something useful and nice and, as for me this is not a work but it’s a pleasure, I don’t need any concentration at all and this lets me talk to my husband without problems.

If you knit in public places it’s like to be with a beautiful dog: people stop and ask you what are you doing, if it’s difficult and so on. Exactly like a pet that catches everybody’s attentions.

I remember one day when I was in the mountains and I was on the terrace of the hotel where I stayed. It was a sunny day and I started knitting. After few hours many other women got closer to me to ask lessons or explanations and those ones who were already able to knit told me that seeing me was an inspiration to start again this beautiful hobby.

Right in New York, that is the city where new trends start, a new fashion (a little bit forgotten in the 90ies) is taking place: knitting among friends eating some sweets and drinking some tea. From the “Knit New York Café” managed by Miriam Maltagliati and from the American chain “Stitch’n’ Bitch” managed by the American Debbie Stoller this passion has reached the old Europe. The owner of the “Knit New York Café” Miriam Maltagliati is very surprised of her success. There is even a man among her customers! His name is Owen Fischer and he started his chemotherapy in 1997. It was right in this occasion that he fell in love with knitting. Among socks and pot holders he still knits there at the Knit-Café, drinks his favorite tea and considers this place a second home because he can meet friends and communicate. His example lets us understand that this hobby is not only for women!

But I don’t think this is only a hobby. It’s really an expression of our creativity and helps us in communication. Everybody needs to talk and knitting together lets you have the opportunity to meet new people and to have a pleasant chat!
Another big benefit of knitting is the wellness it gives you: it relaxes and in the U.S.A. knitting is the new yoga!

Lily Chin, who got the nickname “Master Knitter” from Vogue Knitting International, has drawn for more than 25 years models for magazines and companies that work with wool. She has also collaborated with some famous designers like Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang, Diane von Fürstenberg and Isaac Miyarhi. Her creations have been worn by famous people (Raquel Welch, Vanna White) and by supermodels (Cindy Crowford, Naomi Campell). Lily has even published a series of books.

Do you still believe that I’m talking about a hobby only for grandmothers? Do you still believe this hobby is out of fashion?

I really love wool and seeing my creations becoming real in my hands… imagine a pullover, a scarf, a hat or a plaid created by yourself! I also like making presents I have knit and my friends always appreciate them! For me knitting is like living in a parallel world and it really relaxes me!

If I was able to contaminate you with my passion and you want to start, I’d suggest you to make a scarf. Choose if you prefer a long and big scarf or a thinner one you can easily roll around your neck.

\r\n

\r\n

Go to a wool shop and choose the wool you like, the needles you need and start! The thickest are the needles you use the faster you work but it’s better not to use too thick wool for a scarf because it can be “too much” around your neck.

At the end of my article you’ll find some useful addresses in Italy where you can go to knit or buy wool. But if you are in New York, you really must go to Miriam Maltagliati to her Knit-Café.
